Flexible working (United Kingdom): Changes!

Since 30 June 2014, all employees have the legal right to request flexible working - not just parents and carers. This is known as ‘making a statutory application’. Employees must have worked for the same employer for at least 26 weeks to be eligible.

Types of flexible working

  • Job sharing
  • Working from home
  • Part time
  • Compressed hours
  • Flexitime
  • Annualised hours
  • Staggered hours
  • Phased retirement

For any application, employer must:

  • Follow a strict procedure (cf. link gov.uk/flexible-working and document attached)
  • Must tell the employee that they’ve rejected the application for a valid economic and/or social reason
